Women Poets in Translation, ft. Diana Anphimiadi, Salome Benidze, Natalia Bukia-Peters, Jean Sprackland and Helen Mort

Diana Anphimiadi and Salome Benidze are two of the most revered and exciting poets writing in Georgian today. Join us to celebrate their work in conversation with their English translators Natalia Bukia-Peters, Jean Sprackland and Helen Mort. All five are making waves in the poetry in translation sector, where women have long been sorely underrepresented.

Diana Anphimiadi's award-winning collection Why I No Longer Write Poems takes us from the contemporary thrum of a train carriage to the ancient grievance of the women of Greek myth. Her playful, witty lyricism offers a glimpse of the eternal in the everyday.

Meanwhile, Salome Benidze's work explores romantic love and all its corollaries: longing, regret, trauma, confession, revelation, even war. She is a contemporary young author whose gaze holds us directly. 

These poets have been translated by three prize-winning writers Natalia Bukia-Peters with Jean Sprackland and Helen Mort respectively, all of whom will join this event via livestream from Northern Stage in Newcastle, UK. 

We'll hear fierce, beautiful, sexy and surreal poems in Georgian and English, followed by a varied and up-to-the minute conversation in English about women in poetry, translation and language.

This event is presented by the UK's Poetry Translation Centre, Diana and Salome's publishers, who is celebrating its 20th birthday throughout 2024.
