The dynamics of word formation development in German from its origin to the formation as an independent linguistic discipline is discussed in the article.

The special literature is analyzed and actuality of the problem is proved. Position and importance of word formation in the range of linguistic disciplines are determined.

It occupies medial statuc between the layers of Vocabulary and Grammar. It's mentioned in the article that scientific research of word formation in German is on a quite high level but the series of issues to be studied and defined further are indicated too.
